Dana white expressed an intent to match top 10 Welterweights Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald, and just a few days later the bout was set and the two fighters will meet in November.
Rory MacDonald won a unanimous decision over top ranked welterweight Jake Ellenberger in a very boring jab focused fight. While the fight was frustrating and uneventful, it secured his spot as one of the top welterweights in the division.
Robbie Lawler is also coming off an important win when he knocked out Bobby Volker. The same night Rory won, Lawler took a victory in the second round of his fight. This is the second stoppage in a row for Lawler since his February return to the UFC
MacDonald received a lot of criticism for his fight against Ellenberger, stating he played it too safe and didn’t even try to “finish” the fight. The fight consisted of a very well practiced jab, and 15 minutes of almost nothing else. Hopefully Rory will take the criticism from many, including Dana White to heart and change his game plan for his next fight. Robbie Lawler on the other hand has been on a roll since his return from Strikeforce. Hopefully Lawler can push MacDonald into making an attempt to finish the fight and not make it to the end and let the judges decide the winner.
The match-up is the second confirmed fight for the UFC 167 card. The other of course being the title fight between Johny Hendricks and Georges St-Pierre. Now, if MacDonald and St-Pierre both walk away with victories this could mean what some would call a superfight between the two training partners, and friends. The young MacDonald views GSP has a mentor, however it is every MMA fighter’s dream to hold a UFC belt even if that means taking the title from your friends.
